Haunted

Based on: The Haunted Man by Charles Dickens

Genre/Theme: A Dramatic Thriller set in post-war London, explores the effects of 

depression on the individual and those around them.

Logline: A troubled professor, haunted by the pains of his past, makes a deal with his inner demons to erase them from his memory only to find such pains are not so easily forgotten.

Summary:

Professor Redlaw, the walking shadow of London if rumors are to be believed, is more myth than man as he hides from the rest of the world, caring only for his chemistry experiments. Exhausted from constantly running from the pains of his past, he makes a deal with a phantom to erase his memories. 

He wakes up the next morning feeling blissfully unaware of his past but is quickly confused by the sudden bursts of emotion that he doesn’t understand. Everywhere he goes the people around him darken in their demeanors and anger quickly follows. Edmund Denham, a sickly student of Redlaw’s, loses his cheery disposition and becomes hostile and standoffish. The usually playful and rambunctious Tetterby family’s conversations quickly turn to arguments over their station as well as Sophia Tetterby wishing she had never married Adolphus. And every attempt Redlaw makes to help people, makes the situation worse. Following in his wake is Milly Swidger who does her best to calm the chaos and keep everyone peaceful and happy. Redlaw’s disposition worsens as more of his memories return. He witnesses the chaos around him grow worse as everyone he touches becomes filled with rage. 

Redlaw locks himself away from the world once again, fearing for his fate as well as others, but Milly won’t be locked out so easily. Despite everyone else turning away Milly still forces her way through to help Redlaw as the darkness surrounding him threatens to swallow even her. Milly’s own pains come to the surface, pulling her to the edge of the same destructive fate that has taken Redlaw and everyone she cares about.

When all hope seems lost, the goodness of Milly’s nature breaks through. Her strong belief in pushing forward against all odds manages to stand firm and pull herself and Redlaw back from the edge, helping him to see that he doesn’t have to get through this alone. The journey back won’t be easy, but they can make it, one day at a time.
